Pendragon Chronicles
King Arthur stories are the father of modern fantasy. Ok, that might be a bit debateable. One could talk about Beowulf and Greek Mythology and all sorts of stories that pre-date King Arthur, but siffuce to say that for me, King Arthur is the father of modern fantasy. I say that because stories from the Pendragon era have all of the great elements. Dragons, Knights, Barbarians, Wizards, even Dwarves. If you include many of the modern takes on Arthur, you have Romans and Rangers and other monsters as well. But to most modern readers, King Arthur is not mentioned with the "good" fantasy out there. It should be. Who sees Gandalf and doesn't think Merlin was an influence? And who doesn't see Arthur in Aragorn? I have to think George RR Martin has been influenced by Arthurian fiction. Well, so have we.
At GGE though, we tell Arthur they way we want to see him. Not a modern reconstruction of how the historical Arthur might have looked (although that is cool and Bernard Cornwell's series is awesome!). Nor do we have chivalric romance and poetry and fair maidens and all that hoopla.
We have a fantasy story. We have warriors, knights, rangers, rogues and wizards versus barbarians, dragons, orcs and dark mages. King Arthur stories had plenty of magic in them in their original incarnations. we have put all of that back, but tried to make it more familiar to modern fantasy readers with the elements we have all come to know and loves (Elves even!)
So spend some time and look around. I think you'll leave thinking...wow...King Arthur is cool!
